PROGRAM # 10031 12:00 PM PT

Equal Pay Act.

On the eve of the 60-year anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, experts discuss the historical impact of the law. Also, advocates launch a campaign demanding policies that protect women, especially women of color, against gender-based pay discrimination, like the Paycheck Fairness Act. They are raising attention to workers who are often overlooked and low paid, like part-time workers, moms, and migrant workers.

Guest: Jessica Ramey Stender, Equal Rights Advocates Policy Director, Deputy Legal Director, San Francisco, CA.

Working While Pregnant: New Rights. Most pregnant women work full time during pregnancy, and even more return to work within 6 months of delivery. A new federal law that goes into effect later this month brings new protections for these working women. The Pregnant Workers Equality Act requires covered employers to provide reasonable accommodation for a worker’s known limitations related to pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. What employers and workers are covered by the new law? What are reasonable accommodations?

Guest: Sarah DeCosse, Associate Legal Counsel, Office of Legal Counsel, US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Washington, DC.

Long COVID: Common Symptoms. One in three Covid-19 patients have suffered long Covid, including some who got an omicron infection. Those who have had long Covid report symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog and other health problems that last for months or years. Still, scientists are trying to find out what causes it and how to treat this mysterious condition. The National Institutes of Health are launching an initiative (called “Recover”) to encourage Latinos to participate and be represented in studies on long Covid.

Guest: Dr. Clinton Wright, Director of the Division of Clinical Research, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), Bethesda, MD

Challenges that Cities Face. Mayors of the nation met this week to discuss a number of issues facing cities, from public safety and mental health to climate resiliency. Since the risk for serious mental health illness is higher in big cities, what are big city mayors doing to reduce stress, improve care and protect mental health? How are mayors tackling the worsening homelessness crisis? What’s “functional zero” homelessness”? How are mayors planning for climate resilient cities?
