Dreamers’ Access to In-State Tuition Under Attack

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13
PROGRAM #11298 12:00 PM PT
Dreamers’ Access to In-State Tuition Under Attack.
The federal government is stepping up its legal efforts to strip Dreamers of the ability to pay in-state tuition at public colleges and universities. Justice Department lawsuits are targeting programs currently in place in 24 states and Washington, D.C. Meanwhile, a new report warns of the consequences these challenges could have for students, universities, and state economies. What legal arguments are at stake? What would ending these policies mean for thousands of young people? And what do Dreamers contribute to higher education and the economy?
Guest: Diego Sánchez, Immigration Attorney and Vice President of Policy and Strategy, Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, Washington, DC.
U.S. Citizens Caught Up in Immigration Raids. Immigration agents have detained more than 500 U.S. citizens since Trump returned to office, according to an investigation. They include dozens of children and teenagers, people arrested while recording enforcement operations, and citizens held for hours or days without access to relatives or attorneys. The Department of Homeland Security denies that agents are carrying out indiscriminate detentions. What do these cases reveal? What constitutional protections do U.S. citizens have? What can they do if they are detained? And can a citizen sue ICE over a wrongful detention?
Guest: Liliana Michelena, Reporter and Multimedia Producer, ProPublica, Berkeley, CA.
ICE Near Schools. Reports of ICE operations near schools in Central and Southern California are fueling fear among students and families and, in some cases, contributing to student absences. Where has immigration enforcement intensified in California? How is it affecting school communities? What are schools doing to protect students? And what does California law say about ICE activity on or near school grounds?
Guest: Zaidee Stavely, Immigration and Education Reporter, EdSource, Oakland, CA.
