DOJ Escalates War Over Mail-In Voting.
The Trump administration has sued California to block the state from counting certain mail-in ballots, claiming it identified voters who may not be U.S. citizens. California Attorney General Rob Bonta accused President Trump of spreading false claims about election fraud and trying to intimidate voters. Meanwhile, a federal judge blocked the administration’s attempt to obtain state voter rolls to identify possible noncitizen voters. The judge ruled that the federal government had overstepped its authority and violated privacy laws. The decision also prevents states that had agreed to cooperate from turning over those records. What could these developments mean for the November elections?
Early Voting Begins. Today is the voter registration deadline in California. What should first-time voters know? At the same time, early voting begins today in Texas and Colorado, as candidates step up their campaigns and volunteers prepare to monitor polling places. What do voters need to do to cast a ballot before November 3? What are we seeing in the first days of voting? And what is motivating people to head to the polls?
Marielena Hincapié Takes the Helm. One of the country’s most prominent immigrant rights advocates is taking over as president of the Robert & Ethel Kennedy Human Rights Center. With more than three decades of experience in immigration, labor, and civil rights law, Hincapié steps into the role amid heightened political and social tensions. What does this new chapter mean for her career? What priorities is she bringing to the position? And what challenges will she face?
