Sin Fronteras. This is a program of “Sin Fronteras,” a special series that serves audiences in the US and Mexico with breaking news and analysis on major developments affecting Latinos in the US.
Another Death in ICE Custody. A Cuban immigrant died in the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a detention center in Georgia. The 33-year-old man was found unresponsive in his cell. Authorities are treating the case as a suicide. In 2025, immigrant deaths in ICE custody reached their highest level in two decades — and are on track to rise further this year, with 18 deaths in the first four months alone. Who was Denny González? Why was he detained? And why are deaths in immigration detention facilities increasing? Report by Gerardo Guzmán.
California Kicks Off Decisive Elections. California’s primary voting got underway this week, with all eyes on who will be the state’s next governor. Millions of voters have begun receiving their mail-in ballots for a process that runs through June 2, and polls show a Latino candidate fighting for the lead. Additionally, voters will choose representatives for Congress and dozens of state and local offices. How is the race shaping up? What do the polls show? And what is at stake? Report by Alejandro Maciel.
Louisiana Gets the Green Light to Redraw Its Map. The Supreme Court has authorized Louisiana to fast-track the redrawing of its congressional map, in line with its recent ruling that weakened the Voting Rights Act. The decision limits the use of racial criteria in drawing district boundaries. What does it mean for minority representation? And how does it reshape the projections heading into the midterm elections? Report by Desirée Yépez.
A Special Tax on Billionaires? A citizen and labor union initiative proposing a tax on billionaires — aimed at preventing cuts to education and health services — appears to have gathered enough signatures to land on the November ballot. At the same time, a top Google executive is backing two counter-initiatives that would ban new taxes on individual financial assets. Under California law, if both measures pass, the one with the most votes wins.
Guest: Dr. Raúl Hinojosa-Ojeda, Chair and Professor, UCLA Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies, and Executive Director, UCLA’s North American Integration and Development-NAID Center, Los Angeles, CA.
Budget Cuts Threaten Immigrants Living With HIV. In San Francisco, the majority of Latino immigrants living with the virus are gay men — nearly half of whom have no health insurance and a third of whom speak Spanish as their first language. For decades, community organizations have provided them with free, culturally responsive treatment. Now, the city’s proposed cuts are threatening those services. What is at stake? And who is accountable for this community? This is a special report produced by Sophia Rerucha through the Ethnic Media Collaborative, with support from the USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism.
A New Humanitarian Attempt to Reach Gaza. Dozens of vessels carrying more than 3,000 people are once again attempting to break the Gaza blockade and deliver international humanitarian aid. The Global Sumud Flotilla is sailing at a critical moment, under warnings that rising tensions with Iran could harden Israel’s response to any interception. While the world’s eyes are fixed on Tehran, what is happening on the ground in Palestinian territory? Will the flotilla make it through? And who is accountable for the civilian population in Gaza?
Guest: Violeta Núñez Rodríguez, Economist, Member of the Mexican Delegation in the Global Sumud Flotilla.
