Just over two weeks after its opening, criticism of the “Alligator Alcatraz” continues unabated. The controversial detention center in Florida was announced as a facility to house immigrants accused of serious crimes. However, a journalistic investigation reveals that many of the detainees have been convicted of minor offenses. Legislators and civil society groups have described the prisoners’ conditions as inhumane and are calling for transparency.
