Closing the Department of Education?

President Trump has announced plans to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education and Republican Speaker Mike Johnson is going along. Also, Trump has nominated Linda McMahon as secretary of education. What are the top functions of the Department of Education? Why is it being abolished? What would be the future of federal education programs? Who would be most impacted?

Guest: Brian Ortega, Senior Policy Analyst, UnidosUS, Washington, DC.

Gaza Takeover Plan. President Trump said he wanted the US to take over Gaza in an “ownership position,” and declared that the about two million Palestinians in Gaza should leave to give room for a tourist destination. Some Republicans in Congress cheered the proposal. Secretary Rubio stressed that Trump would not deploy US troops on the ground. Experts call it a war crime. Will the US take over Gaza? How is this talk impacting the ceasefire?

Guest: Alexander Aviña, Associate Professor, School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, Arizona State University-ASU, Tempe, AZ.

Reservoir Water Dumped. President Trump ordered military engineers to open two dams in California’s Central Valley as a way to help combat wildfires in Los Angeles and irrigate farmlands. Central Valley water managers said the move was pointless and billions of gallons of water will be thrown away and wasted.

Guest: Rudy Arredondo, Founder and Director, Latino Farmers & Ranchers International, Inc., Germantown, MD, today from Salt Lake City, UT.
