Citizenship Month.

During Citizenship Month, immigrant rights organizations are celebrating the contributions of naturalized immigrants while advocating for a path to citizenship for the 9 million people who are eligible to naturalize. They are also drawing attention to White House efforts to restrict access to citizenship and legal immigration, including higher application fees, canceled interviews and naturalization ceremonies, subjective “good moral character” standards, and a more difficult civics test.

Do Immigrants Commit More Crimes Than Others? Despite narratives about waves of crime caused by immigrants, a large-scale study by the University of California, Irvine, found no link between undocumented immigrants and crime. After analyzing demographic and police data over several years, the researchers concluded that communities with a higher concentration of immigrants do not experience more serious crimes. What are the findings of this report? What do these conclusions mean in light of the anti-immigrant narrative in Washington?

Court blocks detention without bond hearings. A federal appeals court rejected a new Trump administration policy that subjected millions of immigrants to mandatory detention without access to bond hearings. The decision follows similar rulings from other courts that found the policy unlawful. Last year, the Trump administration changed the rules to require anyone who entered the country without going through immigration inspection to be detained without the possibility of release on bond. Those affected included people who may be eligible to obtain legal status.
