Citizens Hit by Deportations

TUESDAY, MAY 12
PROGRAM #11137 12:00 PM PT

Citizens Hit by Deportations.

Fourteen million U.S. citizens and permanent residents live in households with at least one undocumented immigrant. Out of that reality, “Connected Americans” was born — a movement bringing together citizens directly affected by mass deportations, determined to tell their stories and push back against these policies. Who makes up this network? What political backing do they have? And how do they plan to make their voices heard?

Guest: Cristina Jiménez, Director for Shared Future, Author of “Dreaming of Home”, Co-founder of United We Dream, New York, NY.

California Debates Rolling Back Health Progress. California made historic strides and set a national precedent by expanding Medi-Cal to millions of previously excluded residents. Today, facing brutal federal cuts to health spending and Medicaid, Governor Gavin Newsom is proposing to reverse course and cut access to essential health services for immigrant communities as a way to balance the budget. Physicians and community advocates are urging lawmakers to reject the governor’s plan. Which physical and mental health services are on the line? Who stands to lose the most? And what alternatives exist?

Guest: Arnulfo De la Cruz, President, SEIU California, SEIU Local 2015, Los Angeles, CA.

Texas Targets Border Crossers. Civil rights organizations in Texas have filed a lawsuit to block SB 4, which allows state police to arrest people “suspected of crossing the border without authorization.” The law creates a state-level crime for unauthorized entry into the United States and opens pathways for local authorities to remove those found guilty. What are the plaintiffs arguing? What is the legal future of this law? And what impact is it having on border communities?

Guest: David Donatti, Senior Staff Attorney, ACLU of Texas, Houston, TX.
