Challenges Facing Organized Labor.

Labor Day comes at a difficult moment for workers across the United States. With no federal protections against extreme heat, thousands of outdoor workers remain vulnerable in states such as Texas and Florida. At the same time, automation and artificial intelligence are reshaping key industries and putting jobs at risk. How are unions preparing workers for these changes? Wages are also at the center of the debate. The Trump administration sought to cut pay for migrant farmworkers, a move that could have pushed down wages for agricultural workers more broadly. After a farmworkers’ union sued over the policy, a Fresno judge blocked the federal action and ordered the Department of Labor to develop a new wage plan for H-2A workers. What does the ruling mean for farmworkers? And what is the state of the agricultural workforce under the current administration? This is a special Labor Day edition.
