An unexpected severe storm turned central Texas into a scene of devastation in the early hours of July 4. As of the close of this edition, more than 100 people were reported dead and dozens missing. Hundreds of rescue workers, including a group from Mexico, are assisting in the rescue efforts. Meanwhile, there are already voices criticizing the alleged failure of early warning systems and questioning whether federal cuts to weather and climate services played a role in the tragedy.
