Canciones del San Joaquín (repeat).
Talented singers and songwriters gathered last month for a concert celebrating the rich musical repertoire of the San Joaquín Valley. The “Canciones del San Joaquín” concert featured new and original works from various genres, including mariachi, son jarocho, and Mixtec rap. In this program, prominent artists discuss their cultural roots and the stories they tell through their songs. Maestro Juan Morales, a renowned mariachi leader, talks about his decades-long commitment to teaching and passing down musical traditions to new generations through the Mariachi Mestizo of Delano. Additionally, Verónica Chávez and Mauro Carrera, from the group Los Fresnanitos, use son jarocho as a voice for resistance and challenging social injustice. Miguel Villegas Ventura, a trilingual Mixtec rapper performing under the name ‘Una Isu’, explains how he blends Mixtec, Spanish, and English to challenge stereotypes and celebrate Indigenous pride.
