Canciones del San Joaquín II

THURSDAY, JULY 24
PROGRAM #10845 11:00 AM PT
Canciones del San Joaquín II.
Last month, renowned singers and songwriters gathered for the concert “Canciones del San Joaquín” to present original works that reflect the rich musical traditions of California’s San Joaquín Valley. In this program, leaders of groups specializing in norteño, Mixtec chilenas, and ranchera music share stories about their work. Los Kirrines del Norte keep alive the legacy of norteño greats like Los Alegres de Terán and Los Cadetes de Linares. Los Hijos de San Juan Mixtepec perform the traditional indigenous music of their hometown—San Juan Mixtepec in Oaxaca’s Mixteca Alta—at community celebrations throughout the Valley. And Las Damas del Valle, a group of young women from Porterville who play norteño and ranchera music, draw inspiration from the iconic duo Las Jilguerillas. This program, produced in collaboration with the Alliance for California Traditional Arts, is part of a special series celebrating Radio Bilingüe’s 45th anniversary.
