In the battle for Congress, few races are drawing more attention than the tight contest in District 22, where an overwhelming Latino majority will have the final say. This district is also home to the largest Medicaid population, a program hit by severe cuts. Both candidates, Republican Congressman David Valadao and Democratic challenger Randy Villegas, have been invited to lay out their positions on issues ranging from the economy and the war in Iran to ICE detentions. Dr. Villegas has confirmed his participation.

Avenal: Government in Dispute. Earlier this year, voters in Avenal, in the Central Valley, ousted their mayor and nearly the entire City Council by an overwhelming majority. Although recall leaders celebrated it as a democratic victory, more than three months later the ousted officials refuse to leave office, claiming the process was unlawful. Their refusal to cede power has sparked intense tensions. The state attorney general is moving to intervene. What prompted the recall? Can officials defy the popular vote? What comes next?
