California Restricts Federal Raids

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30
PROGRAM #10913 12:00 PM PT
California Restricts Federal Raids.
New laws in California prohibit federal agents from wearing masks that cover their faces and from entering schools, hospitals, and courthouses without a search warrant. In a confrontation, the White House has warned it will not comply with these state laws. What exactly do the new laws say? What protections does it offer to immigrant communities? Will other states follow this path? Can a state block federal operations? How will the rules be enforced?
Guests: Sen. Maria Elena Durazo, California State Senator (D-Los Angeles), Sacramento, CA; Polo Morales, Deputy Director of Programs, California Immigrant Policy Center, Los Angeles, CA.
Immigrants Shot at ICE Facility. A shooting at an ICE detention center in Dallas left one migrant dead and two others critically wounded. The attacker — who died by suicide at the scene — left behind ammunition supposedly marked with the phrase “ANTI-ICE.” The White House has used this incident to blame critics of ICE agents for inciting violence. Human rights advocates respond that such violence arises when ICE dehumanizes detainees, demanding accountability from DHS for failing to protect those in custody. What is known about the attacker’s motives? What are the repercussions of this assault?
Guests: Kate Lincoln-Goldfinch, Attorney specializing in immigration civil rights, Austin, TX; Mariana Pineda, Reporter, Houston, TX.
Claims Over Abuse in New Detention Facility. At California’s largest new immigrant detention center, serious allegations of inhumane treatment have surfaced: solitary confinement, medical neglect, retaliation, and barriers to legal defense. The facility was opened without the required municipal permits and is now under investigation for possible legal and sanitary violations. What do the complaints reveal? Under what conditions is this center operating? And what is the stance of local officials?
Guests: Melissa Montalvo, Latino Communities Reporter, Fresno Bee Fresno, CA.
