California Prop 40

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8
PROGRAM #11261 11:00 AM PT
California Prop 40.
Proposition 40 — the Billionaire Tax Act — would impose a 5% tax on the wealth of California’s roughly 250 billionaires, a first-of-its-kind measure in the United States. The tax could generate tens of billions of dollars in new revenue to help offset steep federal cuts to health care, food assistance, and education. However, some groups have raised concerns about the still-unknown long-term economic effects of such an unprecedented tax. Billionaires are expected to mount legal challenges to the measure.
Guest: Dave Regan, President, SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West, Berkeley, CA (voiceover translation by Radio Bilingue’s News Director, Samuel Orozco).
Fresno Measure S. Fresno County voters will decide in November the future of a half-cent sales tax for transportation after a judge rejected an effort by local county supervisors to block the measure, ending a legal battle. Measure S — also known as the “Better Roads, Safe Streets” initiative — gathered enough signatures to qualify for the ballot, but Fresno County supervisors sought to delay the vote. A judge has now cleared the way for the measure to appear on the November ballot.
Guest: Veronica Garibay-Gonzalez, Co-Director, Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability, Fresno, CA.
