WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13
PROGRAM #10865 12:00 PM PT

Artificial Intelligence: The White House Plan.

The White House has unveiled an ambitious national artificial intelligence plan aimed at achieving global technological dominance by building massive infrastructure and deregulating the industry to accelerate progress. Meanwhile, a broad social coalition is raising concerns about the potential prioritization of corporate interests over the public good. They’ve launched a counterplan to address the environmental impact of data centers, worker displacement, safety standards, and threats to democracy. How can we prevent the worst fears from becoming reality?

Guest: Orson Aguilar, Founding President and CEO, LatinoProsperity, Los Angeles, CA.

DACA Recipients at Risk. Despite the legal protections provided by the DACA program, reports of recipients being arrested, detained, or even deported are on the rise. The Trump administration has repeatedly attempted to strip them of their benefits, and DHS officials have gone so far as to urge DACA recipients to self-deport. In this increasingly hostile climate, what do these new threats mean? How many recipients have been affected? What should a DACA recipient do if arrested? Analysts weigh in on these questions and the vital role Dreamers play in today’s society.

Guest: Rosa Barrientos, Senior Policy Analyst for Immigration, Center for American Progress, Washington, DC.

60 Years of the Voting Rights Act. This month marks six decades since the Voting Rights Act was signed, a historic victory against racial discrimination in U.S. elections. However, experts warn that the landmark law is now facing threats like never before. What’s been the legacy of this law? What are its biggest threats? How secure is the right to vote for communities of color today? What’s the future of the VRA?.

Guest: Kira Romero-Craft, Attorney, Brennan Center for Justice, Orlando, FL.
