TUESDAY, MARCH 3

PROGRAM #11067 12:00 PM PT

Arbitrary Detentions.

After arriving in the United States at just four years old, Milena Araya built her life as an immigrant: she benefited from DACA, pursued her education, and started a family. But when she tried to obtain permanent residency, she was detained at an immigration office in San Diego. She spent two weeks incarcerated before being released. What does her case reveal about the system? Which rights are left in limbo? Milena shares her firsthand account of the pitfalls of her legal process and her time in detention.

Guests: Milena Araya, Immigrant, San Diego, CA; Veronica Garcia, Staff Attorney, Immigrant Legal Resource Center-ILRC; Oakland, CA; Desiree Yepez, Managing News Producer, Radio Bilingüe, Palo Alto, CA.

Student Walkouts: Applause and Censure. Thousands of high school students across most states have walked out of school to protest ICE raids. While some school districts and state governments have defended students’ right to express themselves, others have responded with hundreds of suspensions and other disciplinary actions for leaving class without permission. What have been the contrasting government responses? What consequences will suspended students face? What can—and can’t—students do when protesting? Where is the balance between discipline and freedom of expression?

Guests: Mariana Pineda, Reporter, Houston, TX; Dr. Veronica Terriquez, Author, “Learning to Lead: Youth Organizing in Immigrant Communities,” Professor of Urban Planning and Chicana/o and Central American Studies, UCLA, and Director, UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, Los Angeles, CA; Daniela Rodriguez, Reporter, Radio Bilingüe, and UC Berkeley Fellow, Fresno, CA.
