Alfalfa crop makes other products as well as individuals thirsty
Did you know that alfalfa is one of the most water-intensive crops, one of the thirstiest, since more than a quarter of all Colorado River water is used to grow alfalfa, according to recent studies, that’s more water than is used for drinking water, commercial needs and industrial uses for 40 million people combined.
Rudy Arredondo, Founder and Director of Latino Farmers and Ranchers explains how alfalfa is grown and tells us what we could do to minimize the impact of excess water use.
He says that California, Idaho and Montana are the states with the most alfalfa crops.
He indicates that the western governors association, they will have a meeting, but it is important that they have the information there about the concerns of farmers and society.
He recognizes that they are concerned about the drought in California due to the abuse of these crops.
He recalls the case of a farmer who has had to eliminate thousands of acres due to lack of water.
He said that they have to work in coordination with the states due to the uncertainty generated by the next government.
