New congressional districts in California?
California Governor Gavin Newsom is considering a special election in the first week of November to boost Democratic prospects in the 2026 midterm elections. Although no new seats have been proposed yet, Newsom says he is working with the Legislature and congressional representatives on a plan that would temporarily bypass California’s independent redistricting commission and bring an alternative map directly to the public for approval.
Guest: David Ayón, Senior Fellow, Center for the Study of Los Angeles, and Research Associate and Continuing Lecturer, Institute of Governmental Studies, University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, CA.
Diplomatic Tensions with Brazil. President Trump has imposed new and highly demanding tariffs on Brazil, arguing that the Brazilian government’s policies pose a threat to U.S. security and economic interests. In addition, he has issued sanctions against judicial leaders involved in prosecuting one of Trump’s far-right allies. How is the Brazilian public responding to these measures? What consequences will they have for workers and consumers? And how might this trade confrontation between two major powers impact the broader region?
Guest: Ricardo Zuñiga, Board Chair, Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas and Co-founder, Dinámica Américas, Washington, DC.
No to Masked Agents. Following multiple reports of abuse and legal violations committed by armed, masked men identifying themselves as ICE agents, Democratic lawmakers are pushing a bill that would ban agents from wearing masks and require them to identify themselves or their badge numbers. What specific cases of abuse have been reported? What constitutional rights are at stake? Why does ICE resist following the same accountability standards required of other law enforcement agencies in the country?
Guest: Rep. Salud Carbajal, D-California, US House of Representatives, Washington, DC.
No to Sending Weapons and Military Aid to Israel. With the slogans “Stop the genocide and apartheid in Palestine,” pacifist groups in Fresno hold weekly protests in front of public or federal buildings. As part of these protests, the coalition of Latino activists “Raza Against War” is preparing to take to the streets of downtown Fresno on August 19, International Humanity Day, to draw attention to the deaths of children in Gaza and call on the federal government to suspend the shipment of weapons and military aid to the Israeli government. An organizer of these acts of opposition joins the program to comment on what they know about the situation of the civilian population in Gaza, the role the US plays in that situation, the role the US can play in achieving a ceasefire and peace, and how what is happening in Gaza impacts people from diverse backgrounds in Fresno.
Guest: Stan Santos, Raza against War, Fresno, CA.
