THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13

PROGRAM #10958  12:00 PM PT

Sin Fronteras. This is a program of “Sin Fronteras,” a special series to serve audiences in the US and Mexico with breaking news and analysis about major developments impacting Latinos in the US.

Guests: Diana Montaño, Reporter, Miami, FL; Jose Lopez Zamorano, Correspondent, Washington, DC; Jesus Garcia, Reporter and Editor of Politics, Immigration, and National Affairs, El Diario and La Opinión newspapers, New York, NY.

The Immigration System Wants Medicaid Data.

The Trump administration has ordered states to investigate the immigration status of Medicaid beneficiaries — the program that provides medical coverage to low-income people and those with disabilities. The unprecedented measure is part of the White House’s broader mass deportation strategy. Immigrant advocates warn that thousands could lose critical medical care. What exactly does the order require? How are states responding?

Guest: Paula Andalo, Ethnic Media Editor, KFF Health News, Silver Spring, MD.

Remittances to Mexico: A Roller Coaster. Although remittances to Mexico have declined in recent months, they have held steady — or even increased — in states with the strongest migration traditions such as Guanajuato, Michoacán, and Jalisco. What explains this contradictory trend? Why are remittances dropping in other regions? How are Trump’s immigration and trade policies affecting these money flows? What does the data reveal about the stability of immigrant workers in the U.S.? What are the forecasts?

Guest: Gaspar Rivera-Salgado, Project Director at UCLA Labor Center, labor studies lecturer at the Institute for Research on Labor and Employment, and Director of the UCLA Center for Mexican Studies, University of California Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.

How the Immigration System Works, What Reforms are Needed. President Trump’s efforts to accelerate and expand deportations have focused even more attention on the immigration system. His administration is attempting to carry out mass deportations by pressuring states to cooperate and cracking down on protests. An immigration policy expert explains how the system works and highlights the urgent problems that need to be addressed.

Guest: Kira Romero-Craft, Attorney, Brennan Center for Justice, Orlando, FL.

Catholic Bishops Condemn Violent ICE Raids. In an unusual statement, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops condemned President Donald Trump’s policies on mass deportations, immigrant detention, and raids near places of worship, calling them violent and fear-mongering, and criticized the immigration policies that drive them. The Catholic bishops’ message comes amid troubling reports of immigrants being denied pastoral care in detention centers, and ICE agents pursuing people while they are on church grounds, which was previously generally considered off-limits to ICE detentions.

Guest: Mark J. Seitz, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of El Paso, Texas, and Chairman, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Migration, El Paso, TX.
