MONDAY, JUNE 29

PROGRAM #11185 12:00 PM PT

250th Anniversary: March on Washington.

As the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence approaches, thousands of people are mobilizing in Washington, D.C. and cities across the country this weekend to celebrate participatory democracy and demand a shared vision for the future. Marches, cultural events, community gatherings, and a “Declaration of Interdependence” calling for living wages, climate justice, reproductive rights, voting rights, and peace for all. What happened at these gatherings? What are the demonstrators demanding? And how are organizers challenging the celebration being put forward by the White House?

Guest: José López Zamorano, Correspondent, Washington, DC.

Catastrophic Earthquakes in Venezuela. Two earthquakes struck Caracas, La Guaira and other territories, leaving thousands of buildings destroyed and killing more than a thousand people, in addition to thousands of people unaccounted for. The presidency declared a state of emergency. Several countries are offering assistance for the massive search-and-rescue operation. What is the full toll? How is the new government responding? What emergency aid is the United States offering? And how is the U.S. responding to calls to restore TPS for Venezuelan disaster victims?

Guests: Carlos Javier Rojas, Journalist and Manager, Ecovisión Channel 36, Valencia, Venezuela, today from Caracas; Frankie Miranda, President and CEO, Hispanic Federation, New York, NY.

Conditions on Voting vs. Guarantees for Voting. Trump abruptly canceled his signing of a bipartisan housing bill, conditioning it on the passage of the SAVE America Act, which would overhaul the electoral system in all 50 states and impose new citizenship and voter ID requirements. Meanwhile, Democrats in both chambers have reintroduced legislation that would create the first federal guarantee of the right to vote in federal elections, protecting citizens against laws that unduly restrict access to the ballot. What is the background of this debate? And what is the likely path forward for both bills?

Guest: Ben Monterroso, Senior Advisor, Poder Latinx, West Covina, CA.
