Uncertainty for Texas Dreamers

An abrupt ruling by a federal judge dealt a blow to a Texas state law known as the Texas Dream Act, which since 2001 allowed undocumented students to pay college tuition like any other state resident.

The repeal affects more than 70,000 undocumented students in Texas and could have repercussions in 18 other states with similar laws.

The judge’s ruling highlights a possible strengthening of federal control over state immigration policies and limits higher education to lower costs for thousands of young people who do not have legal status in the US.
