Remember the annual tax return deadline

By Radio Bilingüe
Published March 24, 2025

The Internal Revenue Service reported that the 2021 stimulus check, approved to support taxpayers during the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, is still available to collect.

It noted that three rounds of Economic Impact Payments were distributed to alleviate the financial hardships of affected households.

The tax office announced that, as of January 2025, it has issued approximately $2.4 billion in automatic payments to those who, for some reason, did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns.

It is important to know that although most eligible citizens have already received their payment, some have not yet applied.

Therefore, the IRS reminds taxpayers that there is a deadline of April 15 of this year, so if you do not file your tax return by this date, you will lose your ability to receive the money.

So now you know, to get this stimulus, you must file a 2021 tax return with the IRS. Some of the key requirements are that you must not have received the third stimulus check at the time. You must also meet the income criteria established in 2021.

You must also submit the required documentation by April 15, 2025.

I’d like to remind you that the 2025 tax season is underway and began on January 27. The federal deadline for filing your return will be April 15.

Another important point to keep in mind is that the IRS announced some tax relief last January for taxpayers affected by the wildfires that ravaged the state of California. For those affected, the tax filing deadline was extended, and they will now have until October 15, 2025, to file various individual and business federal tax returns and make tax payments.

This year, in addition to Free File, this service (which allows you to prepare and file your returns online for free), the Direct File format will be available in 25 states so eligible taxpayers can file their taxes directly with the IRS for free.

The IRS also provides some tips on its website that you should consider when filing your return. It added that to check your refund if you filed your return electronically (e-file), you can check the status after approximately 48 hours on the website; there is a link that says “Where’s My Refund?”

I’d like to remind you that the 2025 tax season is underway and began on January 27th. The federal deadline for filing your return is April 15th.

Remember that the IRS also announced that it will impose fines on taxpayers who do not comply with this tax requirement by the deadline, which will expire on April 15th in 2025. Starting the following day, if you haven’t filed your return, you may receive a non-compliance letter in which the authorities will require payment of the full amount owed, as well as interest and other administrative fees.

Comply with this obligation and don’t wait until the last day.
