RADIO BILINGÜE celebrates 45 years on air

By Radio Bilingüe
Published July 04, 2025

Radio Bilingüe is celebrating 45 years on the air with the purpose of serving as a voice to empower Latinos, indigenous Mexicans and other underserved communities.

As you know, Radio Bilingüe is a 45-year-old station that connects listeners to new national and local stories that amplify the diverse perspectives and experiences of Latinos.

We work over the years to address the issues that most impact Latino communities today, but we also highlight the contributions and accomplishments of those Latinos working for a healthy and sustainable future. And we showcase, promote and are proud of our roots.

Radio Bilingüe was founded in 1976 in California by Hugo Morales, along with Latino activists, farm workers and community members. Their primary goal was to establish a public radio station that would serve the growing Latino community by providing access to culturally and socially relevant media, news and information. The station became the first high-powered FM radio station to provide this type of service.

By the way, let’s listen from our archives to the first Radio Bilingüe signal that went on the air, it is Hugo Morales founder of this great project.

It is very important to keep in mind this is how bilingual radio was born with a mission to serve our migrant community with information that serves them and helps them analyze what is happening in the country, our programming focuses on the arts, culture and Latin languages as the fabric of our communities.

Let’s listen now to our News Director Samuel Orozco, one of the most outstanding voices known to you, our listeners.

Radio Bilingüe grew from a community station to become the national network of Latino stations in the U.S. broadcasting our national news in Spanish on health, immigration, workers’ rights, climate resilience, voting, racial justice and more.

Programming also connects listeners in many isolated communities to each other, on the air from coast to coast and across the U.S.-Mexico border.

In these times of Trump administration attacks on migrants, Radio Bilingüe continues to work to provide them with information and analysis. Chelis Lopez is another current voice on Radio Bilingüe….

Throughout the years we have always counted on your kind listening and support. And it is true that our audiences make it possible for us to continue on the radio spectrum.

Thank you very much for joining us and continuing to contribute with your comments, but also with your donations so that we can continue to be on the air and open our microphones for you, giving voice to our community.

Remember Radio Bilingüe is a national public radio network in the United States, the leading producer of Spanish-language content for the U.S. public radio system. And we remain committed to social justice, equity and access to information for Latino communities, especially for essential workers, immigrants and working families.

Congratulations to the entire team that makes it possible for RB to stay on the air.
