Organizations in California take families to the beach, often meeting it for the first time. “Let’s Go to the Beach.”
With the goal of democratizing public spaces such as beaches, Mujeres de la Tierra, a Los Angeles community-based organization has launched the “Vamos a la Playa” initiative to offer families and children from marginalized urban areas their first day at the beach.
Irma Muñoz, Founder, President and Executive Director, Mujeres de la Tierra, Los Angeles, CA, recalls that this project began because she herself was kicked off a beach in California and told it was private.
She explains that this gave rise to the idea of gathering people in local organizations and churches and taking them to a beach in Malibu.

commented that there is a beach in Malibu called Escondido, but the people who reside there have treated them badly and acted with racism against them, let’s hear it from Irma Muñoz.
She made it clear that the beaches are public.
She recalls that in the summer they have taken many people.
In addition, Irma Muñoz, states that families can learn about marine life and environmental responsibility and get motivated to improve the quality of the sea.
