Mothers of Children with Special Needs Offer Each Other Support – Latina mothers of children with disabilities in rural California face significant challenges. In addition to facing the stigma of having a son or daughter with special needs, they also have to navigate bureaucratic barriers to medical care and endure the emotional toll it takes on a family. In California’s Central Valley, an organization founded by a mother who overcame those challenges is providing support and comfort for those seeking a better quality of life for their children. Daniela Rodriguez shares her stories from Stockton in Northern California.
Environmentalists are Slowly Greening the Barren Colorado River Delta – Overuse and drought due to global warming have severely altered the once mighty Colorado River. The waterway no longer reaches the Gulf of California, as it did more than six decades ago. As a result, the Colorado River delta, located on the Mexican side of the border, has become dry and desolate. To combat the environmental deterioration, a bi-national organization has rallied neighbors and volunteers around a habitat restoration project called Laguna Grande. The project is giving hope to environmentalists and residents of the region. Alejandro Maciel visited the project and reports from Mexicali.
