By Radio Bilingüe
Published September 24, 2025

New Mexico will become the first state in the country to offer free, universal childcare for all families. Starting in November, the measure is expected to save every household in the state thousands of dollars per child per year.

This program will allow mothers to continue working or studying, but it will also benefit childcare workers.

Merline Gallegos, Director of Kelly’s Learning Academy, explains how the program will be funded.

What age range does this program cover? Let’s hear from Merline Gallegos, Director of Kelly’s Learning Academy.

How can people apply?

Merline Gallegos clarifies that children must have legal status in the US, even if their parents do not.

How will the wages of childcare workers improve?

How will they ensure that these resources reach the Latino community or those with limited resources?

Merline Gallegos discusses the benefits for families, but also for workers in the childcare sector.

Finally, she confirms that this program can be replicated in other US states so that children and their families can benefit.
