Migrants Advance in New Caravan towards the US-Mexico Border
A new migrant caravan is currently advancing towards the United States from the Mexican state of Chiapas, there are more than 2,200 people, including adults and children, entire families. Among the demands are security and the lack of governmental support to obtain transit permits, but mainly they want to reach the US before the presidential election next November.
The nationalities of the members of the caravan are Central Americans mainly from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Cuba, Ecuador, Colombia and the Dominican Republic.
On this issue, Oscar Chacon, Co-Founder and Executive Director of the Americas Alliance in Chicago, IL, comments that the caravan advancing through southern Mexico will have an impact on the perception of voters on the management of migration, since the Republicans have made this issue a priority, although there are other more relevant issues in the country that are not on the table.
Óscar Chacón, recognizes that the caravan moving towards the United States could be used by politicians, especially Republicans. He clarifies to the population that it is not a crisis, as the Republican narrative points out.
He also regrets that Trump uses migrants and accuses them of being criminals, recognizes that the Democrats have not exalted the virtues of migration and therefore it is necessary to defend migrants.
Óscar Chacón, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Alianza Américas, Chicago, IL considers that the immigration issue must be rethought before US society as a benefit in all areas.
I reiterate that we must make it clear to the people that migration is a good thing and not as the Republican Donald Trump claims.
As you know the caravans in many cases are encouraged by the migrants themselves who are tired of waiting so they start their way to the US border, in many cases risking their lives and their families, and always having in mind to seek a better quality of life or fleeing violence or poverty in their countries.
