Mariachi music today headlines the most exclusive halls of the fine arts as an unquestionable cultural ambassador of Mexico to the world. The mariachi tradition was named to UNESCO’s list of the world’s intangible cultural heritage. But this recognition has not always been the case. The mariachi had humble beginnings. An internationally renowned expert on mariachi culture discusses findings published in his recent books.
