Fifty Years of Mexican Folklórico Dance. Mexican folk dance groups from all over the US are meeting in Albuquerque this summer to celebrate 50 years of the Asociación Nacional de Grupos Folklóricos, a national network organized at the peak of the Chicano movement to elevate Mexico’s folk dance, music, and art traditions. In these decades, the vibrant folk dances from Souther, Central and Northern Mexico and the US Southwest have captured the hearts of generations of kids of diverse backgrounds in the US. This holiday edition features a conversation with veteran pioneers of the bailable folklórico organization on the history and the state of the Mexican cultural tradition.

Car-Tire Pollution Killing Fishes. Scientists studied why coho salmon returning to Seattle-area streams to spawn were dying en masse. After years of research, they announced that they had found the culprit: a car-tire chemical. As a result, US regulators and California are taking steps to regulate or ban the chemical.

As of 2024, California’s entitlement to health insurance for low-income people became a reality, and this year it has been extended to all undocumented immigrants, who were previously excluded. How is the information for Medi-Cal renewal getting out to those eligible? Cracking Down on Fentanyl. Riding as part of a foreign aid package, the FEND OFF Fentanyl Act was signed into law. The legislation declares fentanyl trafficking a national emergency and plans to crack down on drug traffickers in an effort to help combat the opioid crisis. Will this plan really help lower the epidemic of fentanyl overdose deaths? Public health and drug policy experts comment on this development. They also look into plans to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug as well as California’s move to offer a cheaper opioid overdose drug as a way to end deaths, among other news.
