Biden and Trump under crossfire in first presidential debate – Joe Biden and Donald Trump hosted the first of only two agreed-upon debates in Atlanta in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election with cross attacks on border control, the economy, abortion and foreign policy. Democratic activists and analysts expressed concern over what they called President Biden’s “poor” performance and opened the door to considering alternate candidates this August at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. José López Zamorano reports from Washington, D.C.

Are Colorado’s Latino Legislators Delivering Good Bills? Latino representatives in Colorado had many successes toward the end of the state’s legislative session this year. They were able to pass environmental measures, eviction protections, bills on immigration and cultural issues, and more. Analysts and organizers agree that without grassroots activism, they would not have achieved this increased representation or the passage of such legislation. Rossana Longo-Better reports on this progress and pending issues from Denver, Colorado.

Historic Dam Demolition Brings Hope to California and Oregon Tribes – After decades of struggle, Native American tribes in California and Oregon achieved a monumental victory: the demolition of four dams built more than a century ago on the Klamath River, along with a multi-million dollar investment. In addition, under their leadership, they will be able to restore land that was submerged and recover the natural ecosystem for the benefit of their communities, from which they were displaced and nearly exterminated more than a century ago. Our news director, Samuel Orozco, spoke with Christina Snider-Ashtari, Secretary of Tribal Affairs for California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office, about the historical importance of this project. Ruben Tapia prepared the following summary of their conversation, which is available in full in the archives of Línea Abierta for Thursday, June 27 at radiobilingue.org.
