President Biden Announces New Immigration Measures – A week before his first debate with Republican candidate Donald Trump, President Biden signed a new executive order on immigration. Under the plan, undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens and “Dreamers” with support from their employers will be able to fix their immigration status. Activists and beneficiaries have applauded the decision, but former President Trump called it an attempt by President Biden to win votes among immigrants. Low-income Latinos Struggle to Pay Electric Bills in Texas – More than 70 million people around the US are affected by an extreme heat wave, which is expected to break records this summer. In states like Texas, there are areas where it is difficult to stay cool as electricity costs skyrocket. There’s no rate control and low-income people need subsidies to pay for electricity, but it isn’t easy to get them. Mariana Pineda spoke with an elderly Latino couple and brings us their story from Houston.
How to Reduce Food Insecurity in Los Angeles Neighborhoods? – Four years after the pandemic, food insecurity persists in Los Angeles neighborhoods. To help bridge this gap through millions of dollars in federal funding, L.A. County officials and philanthropic groups are awarding funding to dozens of community organizations that grow or distribute food and teach others about nutrition. They announced the winners of these funds in an organic garden in the city of Compton, south of Los Angeles. Rubén Tapia was there and he joins us with this report.
