Don’t forget to vote on Prop. 50

By Radio Bilingüe
Published November 04, 2025

On November 4, 2025, Californians are called to participate in the State Special Election and decide whether Proposition 50 will move forward or not. This is a decision that could influence how U.S. congressional district maps are drawn in California, and with that, the state’s political representation.

What exactly does Proposition 50 propose?

Proposition 50 is a legislative constitutional amendment appearing on the November special ballot. A “Yes” vote would mean that California would use new congressional district maps drawn by the state Legislature, rather than by the current independent commission, but it would only be temporary for the 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections, until the California Citizens Redistricting Commission (CCRC) resumes its role after the 2030 census.

A “No” vote would mean that the current maps, those drawn up by the independent commission, would remain in place until the next redistricting cycle begins after the 2030 census.

Proposition 50 comes on the heels of recent changes made by Texas to its own districts to favor the Republican Party, according to the initiative’s proponents.

Why is it important? And above all, why is it important for you to participate? Well, look, district maps determine which communities and which parties have an advantage in electing representatives to the U.S. Congress; redistricting can change how many seats a party can win in a state.

Today is the last day of the election, and anyone registered to vote in California can still participate.

If you are voting by mail, you can still… it is important that you deposit your ballot in an authorized mailbox or in person on election day.
In this and all elections, it is very important to remember that your voice matters, so make your voting plan today.

Besides, voting only takes a few minutes, but its effect can last for years.

Another important element to consider is that the proponents of Proposition 50 are asking you to decide with your vote whether the proposal moves forward or stays the same, so it is a clear decision: accept a temporary change in the way congressional districts are drawn, which would be a Yes vote, or maintain the current model until the CCRC acts again after the 2030 census, which would be a No vote.

If you live in California, your vote will have a direct impact on how political power is distributed in the state and, therefore, on ensuring that your interests are represented in Congress.

And you are not only voting for yourself, but also for the benefit of your community, which often does not have the privilege of voting and deciding.

So now you know, voting takes a few minutes, your voice counts, and encourage a friend to vote too. Go to the polls with your family. Remember, it’s a celebration of democracy.

Be part of the movement that strengthens our democracy.

Voting is safe, easy, and accessible to everyone, so don’t hesitate. You still have time, so go out and vote.
