Cesar Chavez Boulevard is Inaugurated in Fresno, CA

After a 30-year struggle and effort, Fresno California has a Boulevard named after farm worker leader, social fighter and United Farm Workers founder Cesar Chavez, in honor of his legacy and struggle, Kings Canyon, Ventura and California Avenues in Fresno were renamed and signs were unveiled that now recognize the importance of the farm worker leader in this city that was the scene of the struggle for the rights of farm workers.

The Cesar Chavez Boulevard was unveiled before Councilmen Luis Chavez and Miguel Arias were joined by Andres Chavez, grandson of United Farm Workers founder Cesar E. Chavez and the family of Dolores Huerta, Cesar Chavez’s partner in struggle, as well as other members and leaders of the Latino community, in the celebration could not miss the music of the mariachis.

Councilman Miguel Arias, one of those who led the fight to change the name of one of the most important avenues in the city of Fresno to Cesar Chavez Boulevard, talks about the importance of this change.

Emilio Huerta, lawyer and son of Dolores Huerta, Cesar Chavez’s partner in struggle, comments on the significance of achieving this recognition in the city of Fresno, Ca.

And while the celebration of this victory continued, Emilio Huerta commented that his mother currently accompanies Vice President Kamala Harris in another political struggle, and recalls that they fought for 30 years to have the Cesar Chavez Boulevard in Fresno.

Graciela Huerta, social worker and daughter-in-law of Dolores Huerta, talks about this struggle in Fresno because in other big cities streets had already been conquered, as in Los Angeles, but not in Fresno, cradle of the farm worker movement.

Graciela Huerta insists that this historical recognition of Cesar Chavez helps the new generations to know who he was and how proud we are, in the community, to have leaders like Cesar Chavez.

Graciela Huerta said that the community is not invisible and that it was only fair that justice be done. With the naming of Cesar Chavez Boulevard, the history and legacy of Cesar Chavez is recognized and continues to live on the streets of Fresno.
