Californians vote yes on Prop. 50, and other voters support Democrats

Citizens responded to the call to participate in elections in different states across the country, with millions of Americans going to the polls to elect mayors, governors, and approve new local laws. Some experts consider this election day to have been a referendum on Donald Trump’s presidency.

In California, in the special state election on Proposition 50, voters decided in favor of the law, which responds to a similar movement in Texas to modify electoral districts, which would give five more seats to the Democrats.

What stands out about this election is the forcefulness with which California voters approved Proposition 50, the redistricting measure that prompted the special election. The margin of support for Prop 50 was 64% in favor and 36% against…

Despite President Donald Trump’s accusations of voter fraud, California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, in an interview with the news director of Radio Bilingüe, said she was satisfied with the turnout. It was a fairly busy election, with a lot of people voting at the end, so we had lines past 8 p.m. surrounding the buildings to be able to vote.

“And I want to thank everyone who decided to vote, despite what they may have heard or, sometimes, precisely because of what they heard. We are extremely pleased that Californians continue to vote and that voting remains a fundamental pillar of our government. I am very grateful for your participation and to everyone who worked to make the election safe for all Californians.”

Weber said they have made it easy for people to vote and that there have always been election observers.

“Last year, we even had observers from Germany. There are always people interested in what happens in the United States because we are a democracy, and many of them are young democracies looking to refine their processes. We always have someone coming to observe… We were told that we had not been informed, but the press had, that observers from the Department of Justice in Washington were coming to monitor our elections. Now, we did not have election observers, but we did have people who monitored the elections. Somehow, it was implied that something was wrong and that they needed to watch and make sure everything was correct. That was not the case. The Department of Justice did not send them because there was a problem.”

“But remember, we have always had observers and supervisors who come to our elections and take the opportunity to see what we do in California.”

Weber made it clear that they have no reports of irregularities.

The California Secretary of State responds to the accusation that the new maps unfairly favor Latinos?

“We often receive these types of accusations without any documentation. I think, as you know, people often decide who is Latino and who is not based on their last name. And often that turns out to be unfounded, because there are as many Sanchezes who are not Latino as there are Latinos. So we look forward to the debate.

They sued us before the vote to prevent the proposal from appearing on the ballot, but they didn’t win. This is another attempt to continue suing, and we’ll see what the court says. I’m not a lawyer, so I try not to practice law.

I simply implement the legislation and laws passed by the state of California. So we’ll wait and see what happens. We are used to constant scrutiny and lawsuits filed against the state of California.”

Shirley Weber indicated that they do not have the final election results and even recalled that they receive a lot of mail at their counting centers and have up to seven days after the postmark to review and count those ballots. So we still have a lot of ballots to count.

It should be remembered that the redistricting will be for the next three elections, but it will be revisited after the 2030 census. The measure would have returned the power to draw the maps to the independent commission that is usually responsible for redistricting.

Another resounding victory was in New York, where Zohran Mamdani, a young progressive Muslim, won the mayoral election and will be the first Muslim in history to hold that office. He has been a rapper, activist, and local assemblyman for Queens.

The victory of the two Democratic candidates for governor of Virginia, Abigail Spanberger, and New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill

In the case of Virginia, she will be the first female governor to take the office from the Republicans.
