PROGRAM #10829 12:00 PM PT

The Danger of ‘Alligator Alcatraz.

The Trump administration and Florida have built a new detention center almost overnight in the Everglades wetlands to hold thousands of immigrants facing deportation. The president promotes it as a national model, while critics argue it will violate human rights and breach national and federal laws. What are the main concerns? Why is it being marketed as a maximum-security facility? What are the implications for the justice system and detention standards in the U.S.? Meanwhile, California fast-tracked a law banning the federal government from taking over closed state prisons.

Guest: Thomas Kennedy, Spokesperson, Florida Immigrant Coalition-FLIC, Miami, Florida.

Texas Floods: Death Toll Surpasses 100 and Mexico Sends in First Responders. The death toll from the July 4th. floods in Central Texas has risen to more than a hundred, many of them children, while Mexico is sending relief teams to assist in the rescue efforts and search for missing persons in the affected areas. How is the Mexican government helping Texas despite the climate of harassment of Mexican migrants? What role are Latinos playing in helping these communities?

Guest: Mariana Pineda, Reporter, Houston, TX.

Children: Direct Victims. As the policy of mass deportations advances, many children from mixed-status immigrant families live in constant fear of their parents being deported, while others suffer the trauma of being violently separated from them. Many minors have been placed in shelters before being handed over to relatives. What rights protect these children? What happens to U.S.-born children whose parents have been deported? What is the impact of this separation on their mental health and development?

Guests: Nora Sandigo, Founder and Executive Director, Nora Sandigo Children Foundation, Miami, FL.

What to Know and Do in Case of an Immigration Raid. The ICE agency is ramping up its raids in Latino communities, with agents detaining both non-citizens and U.S. citizens during their violent operations. Amidst this wave of aggressive raids, how should you proceed if you are caught in one? What rights are protected, even for those without documentation? What are the steps to take during one of these operations? What are ICE’s most common ruses? What can and can’t ICE do?

Guest: Lázaro Salazar, Immigration Attorney, Lazaro Salazar Law, Inc., Fresno, CA.
