End to Birthright Citizenship?
Once considered a fringe and extremist theory, the plan to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants is now mainstream, at the center of the national debate. The Supreme Court brought Trump’s executive order to the fore. What can we expect next month and in October when the Court will address the issue in detail?
Guest: Dr. Maria-Elena Young, Assistant Professor of Public Health, University of California at Merced, Merced, CA.
Journalism and Courage. The International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) announced the winners of its annual Courage in Journalism Awards, recognizing women who have reported under threat to expose the truth. Among them is Mexican-born Maritza Felix, an immigrant journalist and founder of the Conecta Arizona service, who has focused her efforts on connecting the US-Mexico border. What are the challenges of covering immigration and connecting communities across the border? What threats now haunt journalists in an environment where democracy is at risk?
Guest: Maritza Felix, Journalist and Founder, Conecta Arizona, Phoenix, AZ.
Abrego’s Ordeal. The Salvadoran citizen, whose wrongful deportation became a key point in the fight against Trump’s immigration policies, has been in prison since his return to the US, facing charges of human smuggling. Although a federal judge ordered his release under certain conditions, his attorneys fear that ICE will immediately deport him to a third country. What lies ahead for Abrego? What are the significant legal gaps in his case? Why is it of such high interest to human rights observers?
Guest: Noah Bullock, Executive Director, Cristosal, San Salvador, El Salvador.
Maternal Mortality Raises Alarm. In the US, women die from pregnancy-related issues at rates two to three times higher than in other high-income countries. Studies show that most of these deaths are preventable. However, accessing healthcare is a significant challenge, particularly for specific communities. What risks do Latina immigrant mothers face?
Guest: Dr. Diana Ramos, California Surgeon General, Sacramento, CA.
