TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23
PROGRAM #10905 11:00 PM PT

Colorado River: Intensifying Drought and No Time for a Deal.

This winter the return of La Niña is expected, bringing warmer and drier conditions to the southwestern United States, further worsening the drought in the West. Several states are preparing for deeper cuts to their Colorado River water supply, as time runs out for the seven basin states to reach an agreement on how to manage and share the river that provides water to 40 million people. What can we expect this winter? Which regions and communities will be hit hardest? What proposals are on the table? How likely is it that a consensus will be reached? This program is part of the special series “Cuando se seca el arroyo.”

Guests: Rosa Luna-Niño, Postdoctoral scholar, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California at San Diego-UC San Diego, Lead author of “Heresy in ENSO teleconnections: atmospheric rivers as disruptors of canonical seasonal precipitation anomalies in the Southwestern US,” San Diego, CA; Sylvia Lara Montenegro, Founding Member, Coachella Valley Housing Coalition, Coachella, CA; Orestes Morfin, Senior Planning Analyst, Central Arizona Project, Phoenix, AZ.
