PROGRAM # 9844 12:00 PM PT

Sodas Endanger Latino Kids.

Sodas and sugary drinks are the leading contributors to the high prevalence of childhood and teen obesity and tooth decay, and type 2 diabetes. In a new report coinciding with National Diabetes Month, Los Angeles County public health authorities warn that Black and Latino children have the highest rates of sugary drinks consumption. How to help the most affected children and their families?

Guest: Eloisa Gonzalez, MD, MPH, Director, Cardiovascular and School Health, Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Los Angeles, CA.

Underutilized Health Care Services. Most Latino adults in California with emotional distress are not receiving the needed mental health services due in part to concerns about their immigration status. Medi-Cal, which includes mental health care, alcohol and drug treatment, experts on depression, grief or suicides, is available to them and it will not affect applicant’s immigration status. Advocates urge Latinos to learn about Medi-Cal mental health benefits.

Guest: Dr. Ramiro Zúñiga, Director, Medi-Cal Medica, Vice President and Director, Health Net and California Health and Wellness, Los Angeles, CA.
