Former President Trump promised to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants if he is elected president in 2024. Trump said he would issue an executive order on his first day ordering the federal government to deny citizenship to children with non-citizen parents. Considering the legal woes, what’s behind this announcement? In other news, U.S. Reps. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL), and Veronica Escobar (D-TX) introduced an immigration bill that would invest in border security, while creating a path to citizenship for Dreamers and other longtime residents of the U.S. This is a look into the debate on this bipartisan bill. Finally, immigrant rights activists held walkouts and rallies in cities in Florida and other states in a “Day Without Immigrants” to protest Florida’s restrictive immigration law.
