Chicago Mayor Denounces Human Rights Crisis Before the UN Over Trump’s Anti-Immigrant Policies

Published November 30, 2025

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has asked the United Nations to investigate human rights violations stemming from actions related to the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant policies, as well as the food-assistance cuts imposed under the Trump administration.

Mayor Johnson denounced these human rights violations before the UN Human Rights Council and requested that international experts visit the city of Chicago to verify the reported abuses. He also proposed holding a special session on the human rights crisis in the United States.

Enrique Roig, Vice President for External Relations at Human Rights First, explains why the Chicago mayor went to Geneva, Switzerland, to request UN support.

He notes the rise in detentions, including of U.S. citizens and sick children, and adds that this has been the deadliest period for ICE.

He also speaks about migrant deportations carried out on flights without protection or due process.

According to Enrique Roig, Vice President for External Relations at Human Rights First, human rights violations have indeed occurred, which is why it is important to publicly denounce these abuses.

Roig adds that Trump said he would go after immigrants, but he is attacking everyone.

What impact could bringing this complaint before the Human Rights Council in Switzerland have in the United States if the UN issues a statement? Let’s listen to Enrique Roig, Vice President for External Relations at Human Rights First.

Finally, Roig emphasizes that it is important for state leaders to raise their voices and take a stand to prevent further violations and ensure that the Trump administration is held accountable.
