RE: Canto Cardenche headlines Radio Bilingüe’s special coverage of “Mexico in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival”.

DESCRIPTION: Canción cardenche, an endangered Mexican tradition, will air across the nation as headliner in Radio Bilingüe’s special broadcast of the Smithsonian Foklife Festival in Washington D.C. Few, including Mexico, know about canción cardenche, a musical genre sung a capella by farmworkers in only one city in the northern Comarca Lagunera region. Línea Abierta of Radio Bilingüe will broadcast the cardencheros, soneros, mariacheros, and other performers of music of some of the First Mexican Nations, in a series of concerts from the National Mall as part of the “Mexico in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.” This year the festival is paying tribute to Mexico to commemorate the Bicentennial of the Mexican Independence and the Centennial of the Mexican Revolution. Radio Bilingüe will broadcast and webcast the music, voices of popular music from different Mexican indigenous communities, like Comcaac from Sonora, soneros from Verazcruz, and grassroot mariachi groups from Jalisco. Radio Bilingüe will also include the stories of ancient practicioners of indigenous traditions, amongst them milperos, agave mezcal makers, chinamperos, and much more.

Friday, July 2nd, 3 PM – 5 PM ET, talk shows on Línea Abierta
Saturday, July 3rd 3 PM – 7 PM ET, Musical concerts.
Sunday, July 4th 3 PM – 5 PM ET, a transnational broadcast on La Hora Mixteca.
TECHNICAL: The programs will be made availabe to affiliate stations via the satellite system of Satelite Radio Bilingue. They will also be available on the PRSS’ ContentDepot. Radio Bilingüe internet will also distribute these special programs via webcast, podcast, and audio on demand on its website www.radiobilingue.org .
PRODUCERS: Radio Bilingüe is producing this special project in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution. Additonal collaborations include community stations WRTE-FM, Radio Arte in Chicago, KPOO-FM in San Francisco, CA, and XETLA in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, Mexico.
