Fiscal Cliff Approaching; Conservatives Demand Immigration Reform; Lawsuit Filed Against Brewer; Disappeared in Mexico.

FISCAL CLIFF APPROACHING 鈥 Negotiations continue between Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, John Boehner, and President Obama, to avoid the so-called 鈥渇iscal cliff.鈥 Tax cuts for the rich established by President George W. Bush are about to expire. President Obama wants tax increases for the wealthiest portion of the population, while Republicans are advocating for more cuts to public assistance programs. Chelis L贸pez spoke with the White House director of domestic policy, Cecilia Mu帽oz, about possible effects for Latino families, if an agreement is not reached before the end of the year.

CONSERVATIVES DEMAND IMMIGRATION REFORM 鈥 After Mitt Romney lost the presidential election in November, a change in attitudes toward immigration began to be felt in Washington. A wide coalition of conservatives, including religious leaders and businessmen and women, traveled to the capital of the country this week to join the choir of voices saying immigration reform is urgent for economic, moral, and humanitarian reasons. Jos茅 L贸pez Zamorano was there and has this story.

LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST BREWER 鈥 As national discussions on immigration reform are rekindled, in Arizona, undocumented youth who qualify for a temporary suspension of deportation find themselves in the midst of a political storm. The Republican governor of the state, Jan Brewer, denied driver鈥檚 licenses to these youth, even if they receive work permits from the federal government. In response, a group of civil organizations filed a lawsuit against the governor, seeking to block her executive order. Valeria Fern谩ndez has more details.

DISAPPEARED IN MEXICO 鈥 Mexican and international civil rights organizations have documented numerous cases of forced disappearance during the last six years of government under former president Felipe Calderon. There are even reports of new cases of disappeared students, after protests that took place during the inauguration ceremony of the new president of Mexico, Enrique Pe帽a Nieto. Ra煤l Silva has more from Mexico.
