Congressman Gutierrez Calls to Expand Deferred Action; Mexico's President-Elect Meets with Obama; Seeking to Create Historic Memory of Violence

CONGRESSMAN GUTIÉRREZ CALLS TO EXPAND DEFERRED ACTION – After President Barack Obama’s re-election, a surge was reported in applications for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, the program established by the President to allow undocumented youth to live and work legally in the country for two years. Congressman Luis Gutiérrez, a Democrat from the state of Illinois, celebrates the large number of applications and calls on the President to expand the program to parents. Samuel Orozco spoke with the Congressman on Radio Bilingüe’s national talk show Línea Abierta.

MEXICO’S PRESIDENT-ELECT MEETS WITH OBAMA – Mexico’s president-elect Enrique Peña Nieto begins his term on December 1st. This week he traveled to the United States and Canada. In Washington, D.C., he met with President Obama and members of Congress, where he heard optimism from those who believe it is now possible to pass immigration reform that could benefit millions of Mexican citizens in the United States. José López Zamorano reports from the nation’s capital.

SEEKING TO CREATE HISTORIC MEMORY OF VIOLENCE – With the end of the term of Mexico’s president Felipe Calderón, the first six years of the war against drugs in that country are over, leaving tens of thousands of people dead or disappeared. Despite the militarization and daily violence, the drug mafias appear to be stronger than ever. This reality is similar to what has occurred in Colombia for more than 20 years. Family members of victims in both countries are organizing not only to demand justice, but also to cultivate a historic memory. Vladimir Flores reports on projects in Mexico and Colombia to never forget the victims of the drug wars.
