Candidates Face Off in Second Debate; Surge in Registered Latino Voters in Arizona; Florida's Education Standards cause Controversy.
CANDIDATES FACE OFF IN SECOND DEBATE – Sparks flew at the second presidential debate, with President Obama on the offensive against his Republican rival Mitt Romney. At Hofstra University in New York, the candidates answered questions from a live audience. The subject of immigration reform played a central role, as did unemployment, the candidates’ tax plans, equal pay for women, and gun control. Rubén Tapia prepared the following report of some of the debate’s highlights.

SURGE IN REGISTERED LATINO VOTERS IN ARIZONA –A movement to remove Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio continues to grow, registering more than 34,000 Latino voters in Arizona. Arpaio is known for his persecution of undocumented immigrants. This is not the only race that could mark a before and after for Latinos in Arizona. Valeria Fernández reports on winds of change in the state.

FLORIDA’S EDUCATION STANDARDS CAUSE CONTROVERSY – Florida’s board of education recently established academic goals differentiated by race. The expectations for Asian and White students were higher than those for Latinos and African-Americans. The announcement of the new objectives caused controversy among parents and teachers in the state. Javier Aparisi reports from Miami.
