Candidates Spend Big on Ads in Spanish; Complaints of Discrimination Arise Under Arizona Law; and New York Immigrants Plan Urban Farm.

CANDIDATES SPEND BIG ON ADS IN SPANISH – Days before the first presidential debate in Denver and only five weeks before the elections, Democrats and Republicans are spending millions on political ads in Spanish. This unprecedented influx of Spanish-language ads reflects the importance that the campaigns are giving to winning the vote of undecided Latinos and new voters, especially in battleground states. José López Zamorano reports from Washington, D.C.

COMPLAINTS OF DISCRIMINATION ARISE UNDER ARIZONA LAW – Police in Arizona began to apply the clause of Arizona’s immigration law that forces agents to verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect is in the country without documents. Only days after the law went into effect, immigrant rights groups are beginning to report discrimination by the police to the city government of Phoenix. Valeria Fernández has more details from Arizona.

NEW YORK IMMIGRANTS PLANT URBAN FARM – A group of Mexican and Central American immigrants in Brooklyn, New York are taking over abandoned lots to make them into a productive urban farm. Fresh organic vegetables are grown on the Granja Colibrí, or Hummingbird Farm, and then sold to the community at accessible prices. These new farmers say that they are attacking the problems of health and diet in their communities and, at the same time, keeping their cultural roots alive. Marco Vinicio González visited the Granja Colibrí and has this story.
