Philly’s Soda Tax.

The beverage industry is fighting against Philadelphia after the city council voted to impose a tax on sweetened drinks to fund pre-K and community schools and parks and libraries. The tax went into effect on January 1st. Health advocates are supporting the city in its legal battle, warning that sodas are a major contributor to obesity, diabetes and heart disease among youth and Latinos and Blacks.

Fight for a Parkinson’s Cure. On Parkinson’s Awareness Month and 200 years after the disease was defined, advocates redouble efforts to find a cure and improve the quality of life for the patients of this progressive neurological disorder. Parkinson’s disease affects one million people in the US. Whites and Latinos are most at risk. An expert discusses the state of the disease and how to deal with the barriers to care for Latino families.
