Monday_673x324MONDAY, JUNE 8
PROGRAM # 8908 12:00 PM PT

Attacks on Journalists.

As reporters cover protests against police brutality following the murder of George Floyd, dozens have become targets for arrest, intimidation, and brutal physical assault with batons, rubber bullets and tear gas by police officers. How unprecedented are those attacks? Are the journalists being attacked because they are members of the media?

Guests: Dr. José Luis Benavides, Professor of Journalism, California State University Northridge, Northridge, CA

Border Patrol Troops Deployed Against Protests. Officers from several federal agencies, including the Border Patrol, have been deployed in riot gear to control civil protests in DC and other cities. Watchdogs warn about abuse against demonstrators because the agents remain anonymous, they are not trained for these functions, and some have record of killing people.

Guest: Maria McFarland Sanchez-Moreno, Senior Legal Advisor, Human Rights Watch, New York, NY

Plans for Police Reform. Observers warn that the unregulated trade of tear gas is fueling the misuse of this and other crowd control weapons, and this in turn leads to human rights violations. In more news, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced plans to cut up to 150 million to LAPD in the wake of George Floyd’s murder to invest them instead in jobs, education and healing. And Democrats in Congress introduce the Justice in Policing Act, a package of reforms to overhaul the mechanisms to oversee and check police conduct.

Guests: In-House Reporting.
