Latino groups throughout the US are calling on communities to Take Back Cinco de Mayo, reject the “Cinco de Drinko” marketing narrative and turn this holiday into “a day of action for cultural and environmental defense.” The campaign, to protect lands and waters, is inspired by other US movements to transform national culture, including Columbus Day’s transformation to Indigenous People’s Day and Dr. King’s birthday into the MLK Day of Service. Also, a renowned historian discusses the role that Latino Civil War veterans had on Cinco de Mayo and shaping the US.
