PROGRAM # 8653 12:00 PM PT

Auto emissions, clean water and more.

In a major victory for grassroots organizers, the California legislature passed a bill for clean drinking water to address the contaminated water crisis in rural communities. On other news, a bipartisan coalition of governors is calling for strong, national clean car standards to protect people from auto pollution, after the Trump administration announced rollback of federal emission standards. And in response to the “recent misuse of emergency declarations at the Mexican border” and other “manufactured crises,” Democratic lawmakers in Washington introduced a bill to declare a climate emergency.

Unrest in Puerto Rico. Thousands of demonstrators marched through San Juan demanding the resignation of Puerto Rico’s Governor Pedro Roselló. The embattled governor is facing a number of corruption scandals and, in recent days, media published a number of sexist and homophobic text messages between the governor and high officials. The police fired tear gas into the crowds and despite the widespread unrest, the governor has refused to resign.
